This four-class series is an overview of the most important “concepts” in IFS— the three types of parts and the Self.
Once you actually do IFS, you realize that these are not just concepts – they are sovereign beings and energies inside of you. That changes everything!
I’ve been doing IFS for more than 24 years— for over 8000 hours. I’ve gotten to know a lot of parts. DEEPLY know them.
Not as categories in a model, but as individuals with their own personalities, histories, fears, strategies, desires, quirks, and very strong opinions about what should happen next.
In each session, we won’t just talk about what a manager is, or what a firefighter is. We’ll spend an entire class on each part, exploring what it’s like to be one.
I’ll also be sharing from my own experience. Some of my parts may already be familiar to people who read my Substack. Jessica, Green, the green crocodile, and Joseph are just a few of my managers who may pop in.
Firefighters who will contribute include Sharky, Koala, Rhino, Rumpelstiltskin, and the Wise Man.
Exiles will have dazzling things to bring as well! Exiles who may show up include Elel, Elbe, Elpe, Cobra, Herald, and Radia the Bat.
These aren’t hypothetical examples. Some of them are parts I’ve known for decades.
My vision for this class is to help you understand the difference between managers and firefighters, protectors and exiles, and why knowing these differences can radically improve your capacity to do IFS with yourself.
Managers
What is it actually like to be a manager?
We’ll look at the different ways managers try to keep our lives under control — and why that can make so much sense from inside the manager perspective.
We’ll talk about the jobs managers take on, the rules they create, the things they worry about, and what they believe will happen if they stop doing what they do.
This class is an overview, so we won’t go into detail about every single type of manager. We will see what they all have in common as we go over the list of types of managers:
perfectionists, planners, critics, caretakers, controllers, people-pleasers, achievers, organizers
My own managers will be part of this conversation. Jessica, Green, the green crocodile, Joseph, and others will help me explore what it’s like to be a manager: IFS in real life!
Ultimately, the goal of this class is to leave with a felt sense that there is a huge difference between knowing managers exist and actually knowing them.
Firefighters
Firefighters are truly the opposite of managers and understanding them can profoundly transform your life. It has mine.
Managers try to prevent problems. Firefighters show up when the problem is already happening.
Managers are proactive: firefighters are reactive.
We’ll look at what it’s like to live inside urgency — the feeling that something has to happen right now.
We’ll talk about the many ways firefighters try to put out emotional fires: distraction, numbing, impulsivity, rage, escape, shutting down, compulsive behavior, and all the other creative things they come up with when they think something unbearable is happening.
We’ll look at why firefighters seem so extreme, why they can sometimes seem completely irrational from the outside, and why they make perfect sense when you understand what they’re trying to accomplish.
My firefighters will support the discussion:
Sharky. Koala. Rhino. Rumpelstiltskin. And others.
Some of these parts have been around for a very long time. Some of them have surprised me. Some of them have done things I absolutely did not appreciate. And some of them have turned out to be much more interesting once my managers stopped trying to get them to behave differently.
We’ll look at what happens when we stop treating firefighters as problems to solve and start getting to know them as sovereign beings loyally defending our integrity with the tools at their disposal.
Exiles
We’ll talk about what exiles are carrying, why they can become so isolated, and why the rest of the system can be determined to keep them out of consciousness.
We’ll look at the different kinds of burdens exiles carry — shame, fear, loneliness, grief, helplessness, worthlessness, terror, and many other things that are often frozen in time.
We’ll also look beyond burdens, because exiles are not just wounded parts. They are inner beings with personalities, preferences and ways of seeing the world.
They have things they love, things they want, and things they remember. Underneath their burdens, there is often something alive that’s been waiting a long time to burst forth.
My exiles will be part of this class, too.
Elel is the leader of the exiles. She may be joined by Elbe, Elpe, Cobra, Herald, Radia the bat, and others. I have many, many unburdened exiles, and they are a delight to connect with!
Because these are parts I’ve spent years with, I can share what it’s like to encounter an exile as a person rather than simply “a wounded part.”
Self
Self isn’t a part or a category to memorize.
We’ll explore what Self is actually like.
What does it feel like when Self is present? How do we recognize it?
What is the difference between Self and a part that is trying to be calm, compassionate, curious, or wise?
We’ll talk about the qualities of Self, but we’ll go beyond the eight Cs and explore the felt experience of being in Self with parts.
What happens in relationship with a part?
What changes when a part realizes that Self is there?
What does Self do — and perhaps just as importantly, what does Self not do?
After 24 years of doing IFS, I have a lot to say about this!
I suspect that by the time we get to the fourth class, the question of what Self is will look a different than it did when we started.
Because the whole point of this series isn’t to learn four definitions.
It’s to get to know the inner lives of these beings and the energy that leads them.
It’s ultimately to look through four lenses to more deeply understand ourselves.
From a Fellow IFS Therapist
“Melissa is on my Mount Rushmore of people who have made me FEEL the most Unconditionally Positively Regarded, ‘professional’ or otherwise.
In IFS-speak, she is one of two people who I say being around their Self energy FEELS like a warm hug. And I’ve only shared virtual spaces with her.
I have learned to access more and more Self energy over the years of my journey since discovering IFS, and I’ve experienced the jolt to the system and kickstart of being in the presence of someone who carries that proverbial ‘critical mass’ of Self energy.
This is what Melissa brings to the table.

Common Reasons to Join This Group:

“I want to be able to connect more deeply with my parts but my protectors won’t let me.”

About
Melissa
Learn from a 24-year IFS Expert:
Melissa Sandfort has been an IFS Certified Practitioner since 2010.
From 2002–2017, Melissa dedicated herself to learning IFS from the inside out, taking 20 IFS trainings with the Institute for Self-Leadership. Specifically:
- • 2 Level 1 IFS trainings
- • 5 Level 2 IFS trainings, including all 3 levels of Intimacy from the Inside Out
- • 13 Level 3 IFS trainings with Richard Schwartz
With over 1,000 hours of in-person training with the founder of IFS, Richard Schwartz, and over 2,350 hours of IFS training including dozens of retreats and workshops, she has a depth of IFS training few can match!
However, what truly sets her apart is her profound personal commitment to the practice of IFS in her own life.
Building on a very solid foundation of IFS training, she has slowly increased her capacity to do IFS by herself, on herself, and now has a daily self-IFS practice of 2–3 hours of intensive IFS work on herself every day.
She has currently done over 8,000 hours of her own, personal IFS work. And that number increases by 730+ hours a year!
To get a sense of this work, you can listen to a free podcast of one of her personal IFS sessions.
As a passionate advocate of the power of IFS to transform lives, unravel trauma, and help us all come home to our Self, Melissa is dedicated to sharing her IFS expertise in the most creative and loving ways possible!
To that end, she offers her own work as a model for DIY IFS — how to do your own IFS work with yourself! She has two Substacks where she shares this work:
Radical IFS - https://radicalifs.substack.com/about
Radical IFS podcast - https://radicalifs.substack.com/podcast
This class is your chance to learn from a Master IFS practitioner about how to work with your own parts, based on decades of radically intense IFS practice.

FAQ
What is the refund policy?
There are no refunds. If you must miss a class, you will be able to watch the recording! The recording is included free with your registration, and you will have 2-year access, as with all classes.
I have done everything I can to provide an affordable class full of value.
If a refund policy is important to you, I am the wrong teacher for you. I ask that you think carefully before purchasing a class so that it is the right match for you.
Thanks for understanding!
What if you have to cancel a class?
I almost never have to cancel — though last year my appendix burst before one! If I do need to cancel, the class will be rescheduled as soon as I’m able rather than refunded. (And it won’t be because of my appendix.)
Class Safety Agreement
Clarity about our purpose:
To deepen our capacity to do IFS and to develop our Self-leadership as human beings.
Privacy and Confidentiality:
These classes require a private, confidential space. A private room in your home or office. Or a private conference room in a library or your car parked in a quiet space. This is for the safety of all participants, as we can not open and focus inside if we are distracted by external environments.
If you join the Zoom from a public place, like a cafe, store or park, you will be asked to leave the group.
Zoom Video On:
Introductions and check-ins will not be recorded, so I invite you to keep your camera on during those times. This helps people know who is here, which increases safety and connection.
Once the teaching starts, I’ll record the teaching, Q&A, demo, and feedback on the demo, including Q&A about the demo.
If you would rather not appear in the recording, you are welcome to keep your video off and use the chat if you prefer. It won’t affect your place in the group at all.
Choice:
You are free to censor what you disclose. No is a complete sentence. Choose to share ONLY what you feel comfortable with.
Confidentiality:
All material everyone shares should not be shared with people who are not members of this group, even if you don’t use their name. You’d be surprised how far stories can travel.
Even though the class will be recorded, it is still only accessible to a small group of people—confidentiality rules remain important. Because it is recorded, please be mindful of what you share for your parts’ safety.
Speak up for Safety:
If you are having difficulty with something that’s triggered you, PLEASE speak for your parts, either directly in the group or as soon as you can afterwards. Please LISTEN to your parts when they tell you what they need in order to feel safe. Safety is our number one value. When you speak for your safety needs, you speak for the safety needs of the whole group.
Speaking for parts, not from parts:
To the extent that you can, speaking for parts, not from them, will help us maintain safety when sharing in the group.
Embodying parts:
During coaching demos, in distinction to other times during the group, feel free to speak FROM parts and to experiment with embodying them. The difference between blending and embodying is: when you are blended, you are in a part and you don’t know you are in a part. When you embody a part, you are in a part and YOU and the part BOTH know you are ‘being’ the part.
No Coercion:
“Thank you, for letting me, be myself!” In this group, there is “no crosstalk.” This means when one person shares, no one judges, gives advice, or reacts against what they shared.
Feedback:
Share how you are inspired or how you resonate with others. DO NOT share judgement, advice, or criticism. If you criticize others in the class, I reserve the right to determine that you may not be the right fit for my classes. Thank you for understanding.
Timeliness:
We commit to start and end on time. We start on time; this increases safety and strengthens the container.
Support and responsibility:
Ultimately, the only person who can keep you fully safe in a group is you. I want to do everything I can to make this group a safe space to learn, to go inside, and to share, in whatever ways feel right for you — but you are responsible for listening to the sometimes difficult-to-hear voices who tell you what they REALLY need to be safe.
https://radicalifs.substack.com offers endless examples of how parts crosstalk and then repair, if you’re interested in a deeper dive.
You are not crazy if you get triggered, it’s ULTRA NORMAL in IFS work. So take care of yourself, and possibly give yourself extra support on days when you do IFS!
Thank you for your commitment to this safety agreement!

Melissa’s IFS courses gave me a quantum leap in my inner work practice.
Before, although I had a daily journaling practice, I was pretty reliant on life coaching for doing deep work.
Now, thanks to her IFS beginner and advanced course, I have the skills to be my own therapist.
My own practice and my relationship with myself are so much deeper, more trusting, and more productive.
The courses epitomize Melissa’s motto, “Work smarter, not harder,” making inner work more fun and more efficient.
Every part of me recommends them with great enthusiasm. They have totally changed my life!
